A friend of mine knew I used to make signs, so she asked me to create an 8’ sign for their California bungalow that they had christened Dragonfly. They were involved with various Celtic groups (Irish and Scottish) and so I designed some simple knotwork for the sign.

Really like the texturing or your font on the word “dragonfly”
neat sign all painted up!

Very nice work, did you use the router for the image and the lettering or hand carved it?

I have done many signs like this in the past and done all the work freehand with the router. In this case I would have used a guide to do the long straight cuts, that are along the edge.
Unfortunately, I’m a bit embarrassed to say, I let a teacher at the school I was attending talk me into taking his weekend class in the large CNC machine, and using this project as my work in his class. What actually happened was that this sign took me 3 times longer to do on the CNC than it would have taken me to do it all by hand. The reason is I had to spend a lot of time programming the machine to cut the image the way I needed it done and then I spent a tremendous amount of time with the router cleaning up the rough/fuzzy cuts the machine did.

Have your say...
