I made this for a GYSGT who works for me. He had some momentos from when he was a drill instructor at Paris Island. He had one and it fell off the cabinet and busted so I built another one that was better and stronger. It is made of walnut with biscuit joinery. I created the trim on the router table, but he said he did not want glass this time so I didnt add it. The actual sword holder is also made of walnut. All of it finished with several coats of poly. Not too happy with the finish since it came out a little bit like thick plastic, but he liked it so that is all that matters. I think next time I will try a gel or wipe-on poly. The back is just a red felt attached with spray on adhesive. Any suggestions for next time I do this?

Sir, I must say that you did an outstanding job on the sword shadow box. I got my feet wet on a smaller shadow box once before and mounted a K-Bar for a Corporal that was getting out. It was alright but I can’t wait to give the sword box a try. As for the finish, I am really fond of high gloss tung oil and when it is completely cured putting a couple coats of paste wax on it. This a very forgiving finish and almost Marine proof. If it a really high gloss finish you are after try using lacquer. I use a brush on high gloss lacquer with the paste wax trick also. Comes out almost like a mirrior. Well that was my two cents. Keep up the great work.

OUTSTANDING!! The one I have designed is almost exactly like this one. I was thinking about a blue velvet background though… EXCELLENT work.. I love it.
