I started this bed about 4 months ago and worked evenings and weekends to complete it. It is a California King bed. The headboard is 8 feet tall and the footboard is 42 inches tall. Hard to see the size of this dude from this picture. The whole bed weighs more than 600 pounds. Raised panel design with 2” thick caps. The whole bed is birch hardwoods with a few internal strips of birch ply. General Finishes Brown Mahogany stain and 5 coats of brush-on lacquer with a final coat of spray-on lacquer.
Now I have to make the dressers and a bookcase to match.

OK, we all now that in Texas y’all like things BIG but man, where did you hide the stairs to get up there? Because if the headboard is 8 ft tall you’ve got to climb to get to the bed itself…
Nice work anyway but I hope it is installed in a ground floor rather than in a higher one.

Very nicely built bed. I like the frame an panel construction – not only it is solid and sturdy it is beautiful.
I like the finish colour too.

nice looking bed, I have a simular project in store for me soon. Like the work you did on the skirts, compliments the size better than just having a head and foot board.

Lovely project and well exacuted. I trust your wife isn’t one of those ‘lets rearrange the furniture’ types ( do you think we should tell jojo what the odds are of having a second floor in the SA area.)

Wonderful work. I’ve been thinking about building a bed and do like the large skirt.
Since you are in San Antonio (my home town), you should join the woodworker’s guild.

Beautiful bed. It’s not easy to distract from the size of a California King mattress, but you’ve done it remarkably well. Once again, that’s a beautiful bed.

The bed looks awesome. I really like the design. Did you come up with it yourself or from a plan? I went looking for your workshop to see what kinds of tools you built it with. Hopefully you have some time to post that.
Color me impressed!

Rick,
Nice looking bed! I like the raised panel design and the overall proportions. Is the bed designed to be taken apart if you ever decide to move?

The bed is designed to be taken apart using bed rail hardward I purchased from Lee Valley. I could not find anything strong enough at Woodcraft. Although it does come apart, each piece is very heavy. It tool 4 men and 2 women to move the headboard 180 feet from my shop to the master bedroom.

Beautiful bed! But how did you get it in there? Hope you don’t ever fall out of bed, you’ll break everything, not just a hip, but everything. I would need a ladder to get it in. My husband is 6ft 4”, can’t picture him standing next to that. But she is pretty. How tall are your ceilings?
