I am enjoying working with Manzanita Burl. This wood has a range of grain formations and each piece is unique. I wanted to mimic the swirl of a nautilus shell but with the restrictions on size, shape and comfort I had to eliminate some of the center material for two fingers to fit. The grain of the wood is spectacular and I wanted to keep as much of the movement in it as possible. I added a collar of Padouk and Brazilian Ebony to accent it with the Purpleheart shaft. The burl has natural voids that are filled with epoxy & wood shavings. It looks more like a Shepard’s hook which was not my intention. I will have to try a different design to get more of the shell swirl.

That burl is gorgeous. It looks like you really did a nice job on the finish, too. Good work.

I agree with lew, my first thought was Elephant Seal. I like the look of everything, it’s a shame you couldn’t get your ‘nautilus’ look. I think that would be an awesome acheivement to mimic nature.
Now that you have the elephant seal down pat, perhaps a flamingo will be next?
