Quick simple cutting and/or serving board made from scraps and offcuts. Main wood is QS sycamore, with walnut and sapele accents. Made with hand tools only, with Paul Sellers’ method of popping the corners with a chisel and filing them up and around the top with a wood file. light roundover on all edges done with block plane. finished with only mineral oil, have put on two coats so far.

The sycamore is lovely. Never had the pleasure to work with any.

Nice board.

thank you.

sycamore works fairly well/easily with hand tools, though sometimes you hit reversing grain and get some tear out. probably avoidable with a slightly shallower set on the plane but i am still learning. all in all pretty easy to work though. i flip flop back and forth in my head whether i like how it finishes naturally, i.e. with no dyes or stain added. sometimes appears a bit blotchy/’dirty’ to me when using even something like mineral oil. but the QS fleck pattern is indeed lovely.

Have your say...
