Mom's Knick Knack Shelf

Well, it’s finally done! Took me forever to design and build but just in time for her to take home as she leaves after visiting on Thanksgiving. She gets to take this Christmas present home early.

All solid cherry, with an applique I bought (sorry carving not one of my talents). Measures about 18” X 25” overall. Finish is shellac, General Finishes Warm Cherry stain, and three coats or spray on minwax ploy (satin). The stain was a quick five minute application just to add some red and even the overall color but also allow the real color come through. Overall I think it came out quite well. All the miters came out very well…and that makes me feel good..lol.

Designed from a picture on the internet of an old french antique and just kind of felt my way through it adding my own modifications to make it look how I wanted. First time with no plans and its definitely harder than I thought it would be, but I learned a lot.

Looks Great, I’m with you on the applique, I never tried to carve, always felt that was another whole trade to learn. I have a hard enough time keeping saw blades sharp. :) Nothing wrong with appliques in my book.
Good Job

Great job Jim! Nothing wrong designing on the fly. Doing it that way will help you learn a lot. Addison’s crib was done that way.

Jim, Looks good. Sure your mom loves it. The applique is a nice touch and blends in well, have to agree on the carving thing.

Jim, a very nice use for one of my favorite woods. I’m also have found that ‘design as you go’ works quite well, just need a basic idea and some rough dimensions. The fun is in the challenge and when it comes out looking like yours, it can be considered very successful.

Thanks guys, the color was even richer in person, the lighting in my shop for pics wasn’t the best. I added just a light bit if the stain to give it that nice red and to even out the different tones you always get with cherry. Thanks again for the great comments.
