Every woodworking project is a BOX. This is my first ever JUST A BOX. Not a house or a cabinet, etc. JUST A BOX..

I started with a log of cherry 18” long and 10” dia. A chain saw got 2 slabs about 5”x6. Height of box 5”. Cut sides and top using table saw. Cut 3” deep and then flipped to finish. 1/2” sides and 1/4” top and bottom panels.. The style of box is know as 11 grooves. Cut 11 groves and then assemble. Ha, ha. As they say “some assembly required”.

I will finish with poly.

Comments and questions please.

Very nice. I would love to make a jewelry box for my wife with wood from our hickory tree. Did you have the wood kiln dried?

No. I’ve used tree trunks of all kinds without any killing. I first of all cut them down th middle, is, the core, then let the sit foe a while. I have used green wood to make bowels spoons etc. there is always shrinkage. Just allow for it and cut away from cracks in log. You can tell if the wood is ready to make something. Be the wood. When in doubt wait for drying.

Nice job on this. I like it. Will look beautiful when you get the finish on it.
