A Master Chief friend of mine from Hawaii commissioned me to make this Koa wood shadowbox for his retirement. The artwork in the center is my own custom design scrolled from 1/2” Koa. I used dark blue plexiglass behind the artwork as a background. The finish is hand rubbed oil sanded in phases up to 2000 grit. Once dry I applied Black Bison Fine past wax and hand buffed it. This was my first attempt at a hand rubbed finish. The folks at our local Rockler store provided guidance in what to use and how to do it. My buddy was well pleased with the shadowbox.

Koa is awesome! Send me your craps…they make great pen blanks…ha. i made a few small things out of Koa when I was stationed in Hawaii. I actually made a ukulele from scratch…..I’ll have to dig that thing out and post it. This box is probably pretty heavy..eh?

That is really nice. What a great piece of Koa to work with. My most favorite wood to work with…just today I have been making a couple Band saw boxes from it. Thanks for sharing

Thanks for the comments on the Koa box.

Al…yes this was a pretty heavy piece. I won’t send you the scraps but maybe we can swap some material in the future :) I get to your neck of the woods once in awhile. My daughter is stationed at Pax River and I get down there every now and then. Maybe we could get together and talk shop over lunch sometime.

Larry I would like to see those Koa band saw boxes when you get them finished. Be sure to post them.

I generaly support and admire the idea putting all those precious medals in display like this one. Great memory and presentation.
