Over the past couple of years I have done this project several times. I think it is always a great way to fill the space on the side of the mantle.
Sometimes I make the shelves adjustable, some are fixed w/ dado in the back, biscuits in the side, usually with 1 1/2” face frames.
Always with a 6” kick to run the baseboard around.
