mmmm sounds like pie!
A center band of pecan (a small piece of pecan from the pen posted earlier in this 30 day challenge) breaks up the continuous grain in this piece of cherry. I’d accidentally cut the cherry a hair small for any of the pen kits I had, and luckily had the brianstorm to glue on this little piece. Did the idea strike me from seeing other glued up pens, or any projects or how-to’s? Nope, the idea only occurred to me because of the culinary connection of the names.
Bing is a cultivar of cherry that originated in the Pacific Northwest in the late 1800s, and it’s grain has alternating streaks of reddish and red-orange/pinkish tones versus the more even tone typically seen in the more common cherry lumber from Appalachia.
Both of these woods came from the Pen turners swap. The Bing was a great wood to work with. Turned so easily and smooth I started sanding at 220 grit. Oh and it smelled great too! If more shows up in the box – I only had the one blank, you can bet I’ll be grabbing that. My wife really likes the colors/tones of this wood. (and I knew she would).
The hardware is all from a platinum Euro kit, minus the center band. The wood is finished with boiled linseed oil and high build friction polish.
This is the 26th item in my 30 day project/challenge
& auction.
