Project Information
This is my second peel and cutter, the first is here. My sister saw the pics of it and wanted one of her own. As I was laying out the cherry and walnut to ready them for glue up, I thought the sap wood formed a paddle-ish image. Sister and BIL are avid kayakers. Ding, ding, ding! That's how it was going to be customized just for them! I formed the handle with a paddle-like shape with the angle on the end to make it more comfortable to hold and manipulate (I checked-they are both right handed-whew!). The handle on this one is longer than the first, as well. The cutter is more symmetrical on this version to look kayak-esque. Only beveled one side to make it easier to use as a server, too. Time will tell if the cherry edge will cut as well as the original pecan version.
I had said I'd make the next peel thinner. I wimped out. Jackie, The Italian Plane, and I smoothed this peel(5th picture) and once it was flat I was worn out. It is about 1/2" x 17"x I can't remember(will edit when I get info). 3 coats of mineral oil followed by 3 coats of Howard's Butcher Block Conditioner(couldn't find any at first). I am getting more confident in my glue ups and will start with thinner stock on the next one for a lighter end product. The last picture is of the peel in it's new home. Sis and BIL are very happy with it. It even was delivered before Christmas!
Thanks for reading along. Comments, suggestions are appreciated.
