Maple Walnut Atlas

Project by scottb posted 364 days ago 368 views 0 times favorited 7 comments Add to Favorites Watch

The perfect combination of flavors (Ice Cream) or wood/color contrasts (Chess Board)... A two-tone Atlas pen with gold trim, turned on a slight diagonal axis, 5” long – and without a pesky clip. The only “Atlas” that won’t become outdated due to any wars, conflicts or border skirmishes, and will slip easily into a front jeans pocket.

Yeah, the directions I printed out from Woodcraft had the images blown out and I forgot to put the clip on until the next piece was press fitted into place.

After bending my pen disassembly tool trying to salvage a cigar pen, I wrote that tool off as useless (coming without directions didn’t help matters, nor did letting my emotions take over rather than returning to it when I was more cool headed). I’ve worked out a nice fix for that cigar pen…. had to cut the jammed parts off the disassembly tool, not going to bother hammering the rod straight, but I digress.

I don’t mind the look of the pen without the clip, though it does strike me as incomplete. But don’t you like how I spun my forgetfulness into a feature in my auction listing? It’ll slide easily and comfortably into your front jeans pocket. – which is true. That’s where I’ve been known to carry a larger cigar pen, comfortably I might add, when the weather is a bit warmer and I don’t need a jacket or vest.

Accented with gold trim, this pen is finished with several coats of Walnut Oil (or course) to highlight the grain, friction polish and top coated with bowling alley floor wax for added protection and a subtle sheen.

This is the 23rd item in my 30 day project/challenge
& auction.

I like it without a clip as well, nice, clean and simple. 23 down and 7 to go, very well done sir.

Matt – the auction,... it’s pretty much just a place for my facebook “friends” (which is pretty much exclusively people I know – Friends, family and old classmates, with a few LJ’s and “internet celebrities” – Matt and Mark of podcast fame, mixed in – but is actually open to any facebook user, to comment under a photo if they so choose and place a bid.
there is another online biz. Pinecones under glass, where they find pinecones, place them in cool frames, display cases and other found glass items, give them clever names and give (or sell) them to the first person to claim them. I took their viral success as a good sign and extended the buying window by letting friends outbid each other – which is pretty much not happening. Typically it’s first come first served, being pretty friendly that way.
I toyed with the idea of doing this on eBay… but was hesitant to have to pay ebay and paypal fees if there was no interest. (I may still, or possibly Etsy. I dunno)
But I’ve also posted the pens here so the rest of may family can see them, and if they’re interested, they can e-mail me too. The ones that aren’t digitally inclined, well, they might be the lucky recipients of anything that I don’t sell. – there’s also the church craft fair next month, I may donate these items if they’re interested.
I’ve done two art shows back in 99 and 2000 in November, selling mostly photographs, cards and art prints of my own at a local country club with several other juried artists and artisans – A fairly high end art (not craft) fair – to modest success, and figured I’d at least break even with this. (which was my hope, I dared not dream or pulling a little profit. But having bought all these pen kits several months ago, any money would be Christmas money – and therefore I woudn’t have to give my wife and little one several pens each.)
The art fair was a heck of a lot of work, this has been significantly less so in the prep regard. Making hundreds of cards was more tiring on my back and fingers than all these hours at the lathe, this challenge has been much more educational for me (a total success in that regard) – and doesn’t require me to stand around all day, smiling and trying not to scare off interested parties by (gasp) talking to them.

thanks for the explanation!!! its a great idea…I am not on Facebook so I was pretty sure that I was not seeing the page the way a member of Facebook might.

I am glad you are learning a lot…and if you break even financially—-great…I think your work is so nice that it would do well in other venues…but that is my bias…I think you are a great artist…

Ok…will keep watching each night…enjoy!
