My youngest daughter Meagan is at University of Florida studying engineering and she wanted a swing for the backyard at the house she and her friends are living in.
Rather than buy her one, I had to make it. ;-)
I had it built by her birthday, but as per usual, it wasn’t on time.
The weather wasn’t cooperating when it was time for the finishing.
One more coat of poly to protect it, and it’ll be ready to hang.

wow…that is nice…I want to build one of those…what size of post will this need to attach too—-4×4? 4×6? 6×6? What kind of wood did you use?

I’m a swingin’...I know keep the day job! Hey this looks comfy! Nice job Gary.
I made one of oak (expensive) and I have put Thompson’s Water Seal on it twice a year since 1979…still going strong. I do have a roof overhead with planters at each end. I’ll have to replace it some day.
This looks as if it might last a long time as well. Is this out of treated materials?

I was reading about rockers recently on this site and I wondered if there were issues about making and hanging swings – is there a formula or is it hit or miss (every swing is different)

Great swing Gary. I wish I had one of those on my deck.
I’m curios like woodspar. Is there a ‘formula’ for hanging a swing? I’d also like to know what the wood is. I’m about to make some adirondack chairs and I’ve read that Cypress might be a good selection because it is indigenous to a moist climate. I like what you have used.

Thanks y’all; to answer your questions:
Matt, it’ll hang from 2” X 8”’s because that’s what’s there.
PJ, the main frame is treated longleaf pine, the rest is longleaf and heart pine leftover from flooring made for our home.
Woodspar & Jeff: I treated it like a chair—18” deep. My wife & I have a porch swing and I used the size of it as a starter. Then I cut and tested the curve for the base and back ‘til it felt comfortable to both of us. Meagan is the same height as me, so she should fit it well.
I used a couple of coats of dewaxed shellac to prevent splotching, then a couple of coats of natural stain, then two coats of poly—one more to go.

Did the engineer have any suggestions on the construction? LOL. I’m sure she was well pleased. It turned out very nice.
