This hollow form vase was turned from end grain maple. It measures about 7” tall and 6” wide. It has a coat of red leather dye, yellow leather dye, turquoise leather dye and multiple coats of spray lacquer. It is difficult to see from the photographs, but it has some great iridescent qualities to it.

All comments are welcome and appreciated.

That is really nice. From way back here looks like a Glass Vase with that Slick coat on it.

Very nice…

Wow Joe – That looks great, reminds me a bit of what is known as pigeons blood, a glaze on pottery that chinese used on some of their vases. I haven’t seen it for a long time though. Great shape and color. One of my fav’s.

YUM! Looks like a giant candy apple! Great results with the 3 primary colors. Do you have to sand in between each color? I really like your sense of shape and color and your experimental thinking. FUN and BEAUTIFUL piece!

WOW! Not familiar with stains and finishes but it looks like you are setting new standards of quality. Fantastic! I for one have never seen wood finished like that before and it’s great. People will be looking at that and wonder if it is wood. My favorite of yours also. A real joy!

Thanks for all the kind remarks. I appreciate them all.

Believe it or not, I typically like wood finished naturally as well. However, I am beginning to change my own mind with some of my recent turnings. This particular piece was dyed red and then had 4 coats of lacquer applied. It was then sanded with 400 grit paper, dyed yellow and had two additional coats of lacquer applied. It was sanded again, dyed turquoise, and had 4 additional coats of lacquer applied. It was topped with Briwax. This piece was left high gloss which I rarely do, but I thought it lends itself well with the color.

Scott, as long as you sculpted the rocker, it would look great in any color.
