This is a train table I made for my son a few years ago. It holds a purchased scenery board.

This was my first (and only) attempt at a mitered half lap joint. I wanted a lot of strength at the corners to put up with the years of abuse from kids. So far it is holding up great.

Can you give me a Little Tech Specs on it?
I like to know how it was made, what wood, approx time, Stain if any, Finish etc.
It Looks really nice. The Mitered 1/2 Lap looks great, a little tip for next time, Try adding a 1/4” Dowel Pin to Lock it in place and for Deco, Say a walnut Pin.
Just an idea, the kids won’t mind, and probably won’t care, but as a Designer/Creator, you will soon work in details you like to make it more cooler or better then the next.
The Only Critique I have for this Piece, is that, If it’s for a kid, I would probably have 1/4” Rounded off the corners of the legs just a little and maybe blunt the corners of the table just a tad. Sitting down they should be ok, but being a little big, they have to stand to reach the middle. And if a toy falls on the floor and they aren’t watching, then they could loose footing.
Other then that, What you have done is a Great Job. The only Thing I have made as far as wood working was a Toothbrush and Cup holder for the family, and it’s Dorky lol
You can take a look at it on my Blog, there is a link provided on my LJ, So I do Scroll Sawing in the winter and Try to accomplish woodworking in the other 3 Seasons til it’s cold, then I come back in.

Handi,
It’s made from maple and is finished with wipe-on polyurethane. I agree, I probably should have rounded the corners a little more.
Thanks!

Oh it’s a very good project don’t get me wrong, I just personally don’t like lieing to people and tell them that their project is really nice.
And a lot of people don’t like me because of my Truthful and bluntness state lol
You did do a Very excellent job, I really like the project, I may have to consider one of them myself for my Boy, I just thought that the corners could be rounded a little bit, it may even give it a little character also, never know.
Thanks for showing us here.
Do you have Plans for it, or did you just kinda do it on the fly?
