Well, I’m plugging away at my Christmas projects. I’ve got the office folks out of the way and now I’ve moved on to my brothers and their wives. Since I’m new to turning, I figure everyone should be just as excited about it as I am. Thus, my siblings and their spouses will be getting pens from my brand new lathe. They are all the Comfort Pen Kit (minus that pesky grip) and the Quick Key Chain Kit.
To be honest, even if Christmas wasn’t coming up, I’d probably still be fiddling with making pens. It’s really a whole lot of fun. So, I’m quite pleased with the whole coincident of my new toy and Christmas coming so close together.
From left to right there is Cherry, Walnut, Bird’s Eye Maple, and Leopard Wood. And, since they’re all for brothers who are all different, they’re all the same and yet all different. Now, I’ve got a dozen boxes to start on for my nieces.

Russel, you are a natural, man. These are wonderful. (The grip isn’t a big deal, use the parting tool.)

Nice work, I’ve always wanted to get me a Lathe so I can do some turning myself.

Thanks folks. This turning thing is way cool. I’m glad I started it.

You are getting some use from your lathe.
What are those things in the middle of the two pens? Never mind . . . key chains. Should have paid more attention when reading.
What are they finished with?

Zuki, that lathe has been great. It’s not too big so I’m not intimidated, and doing pens is downright fun and good practice for when I decide to move to more complex things. It was well worth the $300 to get started.
The finish is Shellawax. It’s a friction polish that came with the starter set.
