Simple Cypress Box

Project by Adam Weis posted 226 days ago 906 views 1 time favorited 12 comments Add to Favorites Watch

This is just a simple box I am going to give as an example to a design firm. I think that cypress is one of the most underused woods in this country. It is beautiful, firm, and very easy to work with. This was also one of my first experiments with shellac. I usually go with an oil finish but since cypress is on the soft side I decided it needed something a little more protective.

Nice work Adam, love the wood grain and choice of finish, it shows off nicely.

Are the DT’s from a jig or hand cut? I find if you wipe down cypress with acetone you get a better finish.

Beautifully built box.
I like the box’s sides assembled – the grain pattern looks running continuously around. Great job!
Is this box from one lumber board?

Nice!

I agree with you about cypress being underused. Besides the qualities you mentioned, it is also impervious to weather.

Very nice box. I especially like the bevels on the corners of the sides. It really sets off the dovetails.

wow it really looks like you used a chemical (forget the name, something dichlorate? or chromate? lol) those colors are beauuutiful, only reason I say that is cuz I never seen cypress with those combos of purples to oranges. Any insight?

I have an outdoor bench built from cypress that I am trying to decide about finishing or just leaving it to the weather. I like the look the shellac got. How many coats went into this, any oil before?
