I am a big fan of brain teasers and mind games, so when I saw this project posted a few years ago I knew it was something that I wanted to replicate. I have made 3 sets now, two from hard maple and one from sapele.

I initially built a fancy jig for gluing up all of the tiny blocks (1/2” cubes), but found it to be easier and more accurate to just glue them up free-hand. The sets shown in the photos were assembled using the jig and you can see that they are not all straight. Interestingly enough, on both maple sets I made the same error and glued two blocks 90 degrees off so that the end grain was not up.

Of course I am not patient enough to figure out all of the shapes, but Google knows most of them and I am great at following directions!

When I was a kid, I had a similar puzzle called SOMA. It was a set of shapes made from a total of 27 blocks glued into similar shapes like your project. It came with a book possible projects you could make. The challenge was to recreate the assembled examples. 27 blocks makes a 3×3x3 cube. This was the first project to build.
