Nice bench!

You can tell a real Lumberjock by the fact that his wall calendar has pictures of tools instead of naked women.

Well, it started out as 200 board feet of maple, so it weighs way more than I can move. The top was scary heavy. I tell you what, though, it doesn’t budge when I’m planing something. I also hide under it when tornado season rolls around.

I’d love to see a close up pic of the tool wall as well, especially the Plane totes.

Great looking bench! Could you give your impressions of the leg vice and crochet? I mean have you had any difficulty securing any work pieces to the front solidly? I’m leaning heavily towards a Roubo bench, but haven’t quite decided on vices yet.

Honestly, I really like the leg vice, the power this thing has is impressive. The crochet isn’t really necessary, but it’s so quick to make and add, it’s worth it. Nothing moves when using the vice, and when edge planing using the crochet, it’s impossible for the wood to move. I used a front vice in the tail vice position, and while it works, if I had to do it again, I think I would use a traditional tail vice there.

Thanks Corey. I have a cheap face vice in the tail vice position on my current bench, and like you I really want to put a more traditional tail vice on my next one but I haven’t decided yet between a wagon vice or a normal tail vice. It’s good to hear that the leg vice works as well as CS says it does.

Corey,

Awesome bench! Great wall of planes as well. I see some drawknives, a travisher,a scorp, and some spokeshaves up there; are you into chairmaking?

Hey, Fred, yes. I have made a few Windsors, 4 actually. The first from Dunbar’s first book, the thing’s a wreck, but I keep it around to remind me how far I’ve come. I took Mike’s sackback class in 2000 and returned home and made two more. I like them ok, and they are great fun to build. Someday I’ll get around to making some more, but no current plans. The block of Mahogany on the wall holds a nice set of Emhoff spoon bits and reamer.

Hey, I’ll be in PA this weekend, visiting relatives in Bethlehem. Small world. Are there any museums that might be interesting out that way?

Take care,
Corey

Corey,

The bench looks great! Very nicely done. I have been considering building a bench in this same style. One question: the planing stop looks to be mortised into the top. What holds it in place? Is it a fixed height or adjustable in some way?

Thanks,
Daniel

Daniel, the planing stop is about 12 inches long, and is a friction fit. I have to admit, my fit is a little sloppy, then tight, then sloppy. I need to make another one, The Schwarz says it is possible to get it to be just right. I use it all the time. It works great in spite of it’s issues. One thing I modified so far is I raised the bench about 1 1/2”. My back was bothering me at the lower height, it may be fine if you’re planing a ton, but for a general bench it was too low. I can’t remember exactly what the height is, but I’ll measure and post that soon. After working with it a bit, the other thing I would do is probably add a traditional tail vice. I think it would be nice to have the additional support and obstruction free clamping, unlike the face vice I used.

Good luck, I’d love to see pictures of your bench when it’s done.

Corey, thanks for the quick response. I started on my bench. II’ll post pictures once I have something that looks like a bench. I haven’t decided on the height yet. I am thinking of 34 to 36 inches.
