My daughter asked me to build a bed for her out of pallets for Christmas. This is where the fun began. I waited a couple of weeks before I started and built the foot of the bed with some cubbies (Picture 1). I brought it in the carport where I primed and painted it (Picture 2). I didn’t try to hide it, so she obviously saw it. She was so excited about it, until I told her it was a bench for the back room. She was heart broken. I even made her and her sister bring it in the house and set it up with pillows and such. I left it there for a few days and then told the girls to bring it back to the shop so I could build a back rest for it.
This is where the headboard came in. She watched me start it and was so mad at me that she refused to come in the shop any more. I finished the headboard and placed the side rails and the center support (Pictures 3 & 4). Because this was supposed to look like a platform bed, I added to the side rails and put in support slats (Picture 5). I brush painted the whole bed white to give it an old feel (because they didn’t have rollers back in the day).
On Christmas Eve, my wife took the girls to her mother’s house to visit. I stayed behind and set my daughters bed up in her bedroom. That night we spent the whole evening at my mother’s house. We left pretty late to come home. The girls were exhausted so they went straight to bed. My wife and I then heard a bunch of squeaks and squeals coming from our oldest daughter’s room. She was in tears when we walked in. It was a good night.
