This is my first relief carving. It took a long time to complete with my work schedule.
This carving is made out of Basswood.
I hope the 2nd and 3rd photos show the depth carved under the wings and cat-tails.
It was actually my first ever carving.

Beautiful Work!

Do you prefer a specific wood for this type of carving?

So far I have only used Diamond Willow for canes and walking sticks, Basswood and Butternut for carvings. I currently have a “Police Badge” for our oldest son’s Christmas Present. He is a police officer in New Jersey. I can’t wait to see it when it is finished as I love the Grain in Butternut.

Love it. I do reliefs as well. But am just starting out with that. And it too takes a long time to complete.

That is a really nice carving. I have never tried any woodcarving but do have a butternut log waiting to go to the mill so maybe I will give it a try. And there lies my problem with this site, everytime I view the projects here I want to run out and try something new, so I have not been getting much done lately.

An excellent piece of work for a first relief carving.

It looks like you have the touch.
