Nice shelf.
Did you have any problems having the stain “take”? I’m making a Maple clock and can’t get the wood to take any stain. I’ve tried oil stains, gel stains, and water based dyes. I’d appreciate it if you could tell us how you did it?

This project:
Detailed sanding to 80, 120, 220.
Mixed a pre-stain of the same top-coat poly, 50/50 minneral spirits.
Two coats of Danish Oil
Two Poly coats.
I recently changed my routine with even better results…and easier:
Quick sanding 80, 120, 150, 220, 300ish.
Light coat Minwax WATER-BASED Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner.
One coat of Danish Oil, darkened to what I like by adding Danish Oil (Dark Walnut).
Two Coats of Wipe on Poly (WOP), w/ quick 400 damp sand on last coat.
