Wooden Hand Planes

Project by Chris Wright posted 375 days ago 1602 views 1 time favorited 6 comments Add to Favorites Watch

So, I got a little ambitious and decided to make some wooden hand planes. The first one was a little shaping plane with a rounded sole and iron. I made it out of mahogany (which I found out isn’t the best wood for a plane because it’s to soft). I made the blade from an old jointer knife that I ground the bevel off and ground one end to the shape I wanted. The second is the small “jack” place. This time I followed a set of planes I found. I used an old Stanley plane iron I found here at the shop, though I’d recommend buying an iron made for wooden planes. The third is the long plane. I made it the same length as a #7 and used another Old Stanley Iron I found. The last one I made was really an experiment. I wanted to make a rabbeting plane and saw a photo of a wooded rabbet plane at Finewoodworking.com and went from that. I used another old jointer knife for the blade in that one too. They are all numbered and dated and were a lot of fun to make and work great. I might try and make some low angle planes later. I’ll keep you all posted.

I seem to be spending my time making tools and doing less work on projects. Unless we say tools are Projects.

I have 1 marking knife I am working on got the blade ground next is honing then temper, then build the handle.

2 small mortising planes next to make got the steel bent and ready.

Nice job Chris. Have you had a chance to try out the rabbiting plane yet?

Yeah, and it cuts pretty well too. A small bit of chatter but nothing to bad.

Awosome job. The ones I have made are not that fancy. I like the design on them all. Great job!
