I had the opportunity to go to Atlanta for the IWF trade show in August. While there I was like a kid in a candy store just looking at the newest tools coming out. While at the show I stopped at the SawStop booth and watched their demo. Seeing it in person is so much more impressive then watching a video online of on a TV, and I highly recommend that if you haven’t seen a live demo that you try and see if any retailer is doing one in your area, it’s really cool. Since they aren’t able to use the blade and brake anymore after it’s used the guy doing the demo gave me the whole thing, brake and blade, that was just used in the demo. Not knowing what to do with it when I got it back here, I decided that this was the best use for it. What do you think.

I think that this is one “sharp” project. :) Normally this would have been trashed but you turned it into a useful project. Nicely done!!!

Why don’t you propose that idea to SS. They might thank you by giving you some bling or a deal on a saw.

Yeah send them a pic and since they do this at shows and tests, they are wasting a good thing.
I want one also.

Has anyone ever seen what an actual saw stop “nick” looks like? I’ve seen what it does to a hot dog but what does a hand really look like when you get saved by one of those saws?
When you think about it that clock is made from pretty valuable parts. Blade + Brake = $$ ...sorta

Very good idea. I was at the Portland Oregon Wood Show a few weeks ago and got one of these demo saws. Next time when you’re at one of their booths, just go up and ask if they have any to give away. They’d give one on hand and I was told throw away the others at the end of the day. No harm asking, I guess.
By the way, the show wasn’t a crowded one and I heard other woodworking shows in Oct. were not busy either. Woodworkers (who usually have more disposable income), like any other consumers, are watching their wallets, for sure.

I have seen what a saw stop will do to a real finger, or rather what it doesn’t do. I had a student who managed to set a saw off, he had hardly a scratch on his finger. It was a little more then a paper cut.
I love the clock idea.

Those are expensive demos they run. I’d be using the cheapest blades I could find to save some money. I now know what I’ll do if I come-across a spent SawStop blade and cartridge. :)

Have you guys seen the show “Time Warp?” They take ultra high speed video of lots of cool stuff. The sawstop guy shows the saw working. You know how he tests it? HE PUTS HIS FINGER ON THE BLADE. It doesn’t even bleed! Here is the link to the video…..I don’t recommend this at home.

I guess now their demo units and blades will not be available for free anymore. You had a good idea!
I wonder if they give away the hot dogs also. I just bought a new barbecue pit.
