I made this fireplace surround out of oak and oak ply. Was my first project using so many bevels. The only thing I didn’t like, was the laquer finish that I applied. Laqer was hard to use. Will probably go back to the standby, poly. (until I can get a spray booth!)

Colleen, this is a nice surround. It has nice simple Craftsman style lines, which is a style that I favor. Nice finish as well and, like you, I tend to favor poly.
