I should probably take better pictures of this as they came out pretty poorly. Anyway! It’s walnut and maple with a finish of BLO.
Mortise and tenon with wedges with glue to secure the head in place. Cavities in the head are filled with lead shot for weight and to make it of the dead-blow variety.
The handle was hand shaped with a rasp and cabinet scraper. I still need to make it to the crafts store to buy some leather to adhere to the faces.
It was great fun to build and a pretty quick build at that. I definitely plan on making more of these and I’m sure my next one will be a lot better as I had quite a few “next time, I do that” moments during the construction.
Steve Ramsey used the same plans I did here: http://www.woodworkingformeremortals.com/2012/06/make-wood-mallet.html and the plans are in this issue2 .
