A few years ago I made a chessboard as a going away present for a friend of mine in Hawaii. Ever since then, I’ve been wanting to build another board. This holiday season gave me the perfect opportunity to get back in the shop. The shop experience was significantly different this time around though – I was only able to work about 20 minutes at a time because it was so cold! After 3 separate 20 minute trips to the (detached) shop, I was able to make all the cuts and plane the pieces I needed. I then brought them inside to stabilize and warm up for the gluing, sanding and finishing. The woods are maple and bubinga for the squares and mahogany for the edging. Hope you like it!
