With the excitement of the Pen Turners swap running rampant I caught the bug. I’ve watched the really cool stuff as it wanders about the country and really, really, really wanted to try my hand at it.
So …
I ordered a Pen Turner's Starter Kit from Pen State Industries, which included a lathe, three chisels, mandrel, 5 pen kits, 5 pencil kits, 10 pre-drilled blanks and some other stuff. All for about $300. From what I know, it was something I couldn’t pass up. I’m really happy with the lathe and a little sharpening of the chisels made things even better. I’m really glad I bought it.
And, a little over a week later, I’ve gone through all the blanks and kits that came with my purchase. I’m now looking at more and different kits, and looking rather fondly at scraps of wood that were once too small for anything. I could too easily spend too much on pen kits and other turning accessories. This could get dangerous.
While these may not be the most impressive pens ever made, they came out pretty spiffy and I’m quite excited about the whole experience.

Welcome to the wonderful, sometimes insane, world of turning. Nice looking pens. Thanks for sharing.

Nice start there Russel. I popped over and took a loo at the kit . . . pretty neat as well . . . I like one stop shopping. I’m guessing you will be getting in on the next pen blank swap.

The thing with pens and this lathe is that I have it in the basement rather than out in my shop. Minimal space required and minimal mess makes it ideal for those times when I don’t have time to fire up the shop, but still need a woodworking fix.
Trifern: I’m always inspired by your work and someday I’ll be ready to learn from you.
Zuki: The swap got me interested, but it’s a bit intimidating. I’m not sure I’d be able to contribute, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want some of that cool stuff.
L3Woodworks: I don’t think you’ll be disappointed when you decide to get yourself a toy like this.
Family Cain: I appreciate your looking in.

Russel, yer killin’ me! You give me your lathe, wait a year, and then buy another?!
OTOH, being in the basement might be a nice change of pace, eh? The pens look great!!

Nice start. Yet another hooked on the addiction. Mwuhahaha! Great pens, I am glad to see you deviated from the traditional straight look of the slim lines and added some curves to your pens on the left. This is the number one feedback I have gotten from buyers of my pens that they like the hump to hold on to. Hey drop me an email over at my podcast site and maybe you can win the PSI kit I am giving away later this month.

oh, you’ll be in the swap by next round… best way to build up your supply of blanks to try out.
When I finally got started with my pens, rather than make one, I made 4. It’s really easy, and fun to make pens… I think part of the addiction comes from the instant gratification… you can take a break from the table you’re spending weeks or longer building, and whip out a pen, start to finish, and feel like you’ve accomplished something.

Damocles: This lathe is significantly smaller than the one I gave you. That was an impulse buy and very intimidating. This one I can move myself and it just fits what I want to do now. Of course, I’m pretty sure that will change in the future. ;-)
Regarding the addiction, thanks for the welcome Rikkor and others. It really is a slippery slope, this whole pen turning thing. Scott, I understand making more than one at a time. It’s like thos potato chips … you can’t make just one.

Those look great Russel. I guess one upside to pen making is you never have to feel guilty throwing away scraps.

Hey Russ,
Really like your pens! Like the curved ones! Another notch to your belt!
By the way, does this mean that the Mrs. is going to find containers of “scrap of wood” all over her dining room!!

Yeah Miles, I’m looking at my scrap a lot differently lately.
Eklectic: There are limits as to what I’m allowed to bring into the dining room. ;-)
