I built two 5×7 picture frames out of spalted maple as a Christmas present for my grandparents.
This was my first project using any sort of hardwood, my first project using a router, my first project cutting miters for a frame, AND my first project being given away as a gift. Whew! The corners did not come together as well as I had hoped. Next time I plan to make a miter jig to get a more precise and accurate fit.
Finished with two coats of tung oil finish brought up to a nice gloss with super fine steel wool.
The beautiful wood really saved me here, masking my mistakes with its contrasted elements.
Cell phone camera photos don’t do it justice, what a wonderful smooth feel it had to it.
