This piece is a stylized version of a particular symbol within the complex symbology created by the Akan people of Ghana, West Africa. Altering the symbol I chose into a form that could be reproduced in wood without loosing too much of its original shape and therefore its meaning was quite a design challenge. I was happy with the end result although it took twice as long to construct than I initially planned. The console is made of highly figured curly cherry with a black lacquer and Waterlox finish.

Teresa very nice console. I’m not familiar with black lacquer. What is it?
