$5, 5 Minute Assembly table

Project by Blake posted 381 days ago 1328 views 3 times favorited 19 comments Add to Favorites Watch

I am so stoked about my new assembly table! My shop is so small I just didn’t have room for a dedicated assembly table. So this is what I came up with.

  • It cost about $5
  • It took about 5 minutes to make
  • It’s perfectly flat
  • It’s very stable
  • It doesn’t take up any room when I don’t need it
  • Its ready to use in 5 seconds
  • It’s the perfect size for most of my projects

I just love it! I have been meaning to make one of these for a while. I really like the store-bought version that they sell at woodcraft (magnetic mat that covers your table saw) but it was about $50. So I thought this would work fine for now.

I just took a piece of tempered hardboard and glued/nailed some 1” strips of plywood around the sides to keep it in place. Then I applied a heavy coat of paste wax to keep drips of glue from sticking. Most of the glue should peel off but if it gets to nasty I can always make another one. It just sits on my table saw and lifts off when not in use.

Great idea … I like the idea of being able to stow it away when not in use. I always seem to run out of assembly space.

Excellant idea. That’s my kind of table. I’ll have to do one of those.

Good thinking Blake.

I could use one in my small shop also.

Still coming up with great ideas, huh, Blake? this is a good one. Why not add some Rare Earth Magnets to the bottom to hold it in place?

And in a pinch you could make it a sliding cross cut sled.

Very nice Blake.

Hey Blake, I’ve been using a similar design using 1/4 inch OSB. I want to upgrade to masonite because the OSB is NOT dead flat. But it’s a lot better than nothing.

And it beats trying to straddle the blade, staining the top, etc. Next saw I’ll have to do this. Probably too late for my old Jet, and since 99% of my stuff fits on one wing, and the right side is heap/storage so often. Like Tom said, you’re always thinking, buddy.

It works great.

I use a Seal Coat coated, waxed MDF sheet for assembly

Looks like my assembly table. I usually flip a sheet of mdf up onto the TS. Mine isn’t edged or anything, just sheet.

My finishing station is similar, jointer with a sheet of mdf works for small tables as well.

This is a “Duh, why didn’t I think of that?” solution. I always find myself using my TS for that purpose. Skinning it with MDF is obviously a better plan. (my table saw would thank me for not getting glue all over it ever again) I have a sheet of melamine similar to this I throw on horses for glue-ups. I have two edges with strips I know are square (90*) on it which can protrude above the surface (depending on which side is up). I find it helpful for clamping doors and face frames.
