For Christmas, my wife asked if I could make a shadow box to pay tribute to her grandfather. He enlisted in the Army toward the end of the second great war in 1945 and was assigned to the 11th infantry division.

Inside:Flag of the US, Army challenge coin (front and back), 11th infantry (WW2) unit patch, WW2 victory medal, and two shell casings from his funeral.

I have always liked woodworking projects combined with history. What a great tribute to your grandfather from our greatest generation.

What did you use to attach the photo & patches to the background?

Thanks for sharing.

Very nicely done and fitting tribute for service to our country.

The background is black felt hot-glued to a piece of 3/16 ply. To attach “stuff” I just use sticky-back velcro cut to size.

It’s surprisingly able to hold a decent amount, the challenge coins are fairly hefty for their size. The photo is light enough to use 1/2” velcro squares in the corners and that’s more than enough staying power.

Have your say...
