This is a hollow form, walnut vase. It measures 6” tall by 8” wide and is finished with wipe-on poly. All feedback is welcome and appreciated.

Another beauty, Joe. She’s a bit wide at the hips… :^D I love walnut, and wish I would have found some during the clean up from this summer’s storms in Omaha. But there’s some elm and maple blanks drying on the top plate of my garage shop. One day I hope to try some hollow forms. You have become a master of them.

Another beautifully turned vase from you Triffen.
Look at the smoothness of the turning and the finish, they underlines the quality of your work.

Joe, fantastic job! I really like the design. Turning the inside on such a wide body through such a narrow mouth looks to be very difficult.

Great wood choice too. I like the curl you can see in a few spots and the various colors in the grain.

This may be a silly question, but on something like this how do you complete the inside? Do you just scrape it as clean and fine as you can? Or do you sand it in any way? In the second picture it looks very good.

Thanks for posting it.

Mr. Bordner, she is a little wide in the hips. She wanted to wear a red and black dress to downplay her hips. However, every candidate for press secretary refused to even consider the job if she ever wears that dress again.

Martin, I turn the inside by first drilling a hole to the proper depth. I then start hollowing with my Trent Bosch straight hollowing tool. I then hollow the rest of it out with my Trent Bosch “Shepard’s Hook” hollowing tool. The last several passes are very light scraps simply for smoothing purposes. A very sharp tool with a light touch are the keys to a smooth finish. I do not have a way to sand any deeper than my finger will reach.

My experience is only fellow wood turners actually stick their finger in the hole anyway. Go figure…

Great job Joe. Love the shape and finish. You’re still the champ, you could teach a class. Have you entered any shows yet, other than that one?

Thanks Mike, I have not done any other shows. I did donate Max to the Illinois Symphony fundraiser. He raised $150 to help their cause. They were raising money to help fund their educational fund to get kids involved with music.

I like how the grain seems to defy the shape and dimension of the vase – though perhaps that is only apparent in the photo. Very nice.
