My first box

Project by Triman posted 381 days ago 886 views 9 times favorited 20 comments Add to Favorites Watch

I made this box to present a gift for my wife. It was my first attempt, and it has a few flaws, but I was happy overall. Zebrawood base, curly maple lid, ziricote walls.

Would be interested in a few details of how you made it, esp. how the black center of the lid was fitted into the white wood. Beautiful work. Very nice.

Very beautiful. I love the way you rounded all the hard edges. It makes the whole piece feel organic with a flow that is so typical of asian designs. Well done on the inlay (or however you did it) of Ziracote into the lid and the handmade knob is the crowning touch. You obviously put a lot of thought into the design and choice of woods because the Zebrawood bottom is a real surprise. Really, really superb. I favorited this one!

This is an extraordinary piece! I love the simple lines and organic curves. Your choice of woods are excellent too. The delicate details of your joints are well designed and executed. I think you could make a series of these as the design is quite a classic. Well done!

Thanks for all of the kind comments. I’ve definitely become somewhat hooked on making boxes, and have now made a handful more. I’ll post a few more in the near future. Also, my thanks and apologies to other LumberJocks, whose far superior boxes inspired me to “borrow” some of their ideas.

As for the question on the lid, I simply glued a small piece of ziricote, about 1/4” think, onto the piece of curly maple. I then clamped it down and took a belt sander to it until the edges blended into one. While you can’t see it here, I didn’t get as tight of a bond as I should have, which resulted in a not-perfect transition. I’ve gotten better on later work though, so I learn as I go. I was going to make the sides all nice and straight, but a side-effect of the belt sander was that the middles ended up thinner that the corners, which gave it a somewhat unintentional, but much appreciate asian-fusion look.
