Walnut Slab Desk
Walnut, Minwax Wipe On Poly

I built this desk for my wife. She didn’t want a conventional 4 legged square desk so the 3 legged asymmetrical base is what I came up with. I also threw in a couple of carvings on the stretchers.

I bought the 10/4, air dried, walnut slab from Dave Spacht’s sawmill near my home in SE PA over a year ago. I worked on it in fits and starts and kind of left it alone all summer. I finally got inspired and finished it up a couple of days ago. Well now I have a Christmas present for her!

It definitely required some work to get it flat (flat enough ) and I took it down to almost 8/4. I built a router jig to do the hard work and finished up with a hand plane and sander.(see pics) Also there were some odd angle mortise and tenons on the base which I also pinned for extra strength.

I don’t think my pics do justice to the color and figure that is in this piece a wood. It really is something.

All in all, not bad and I have room to walk in my basement shop again.

The pic of the grain is amazing and you say it doesn’t do justice. It looks amazing from here.
