This shaker-style candle box is a gift for my cousin, whose name I drew in my family’s Secret Santa lottery. It’s a little smaller than a traditional shaker box, but the dimensions were determined by the piece of cherry I had on hand.

The dovetails were cut on the band saw using this jig . This was my first actual dovetail box. I cut practice joints once a day for a week until I felt confident enough to take on the box. They fit beautifully on the sides of the pins and tails, but I still need some practice with my chisels to get rid of all the gaps. A little CA glue and wood flour got it to where I am comfortable giving it as a gift.

Finish is a couple of coats of amber shellac and paste wax.

I’m looking forward to seeing how it looks in a year or two as the cherry does its thing.
