This is a quick project to tie folks over until my bigger ones are finished. My small mallet fell apart because the wood was not seasoned enough. I grabbed another piece from my nearly endless supply of black locust and turned another one. Start to finish this took about an hour. No promises but I intend on being more careful with this one until it has cured fully.

I really lilke the mallet. I’ve made a few myself. Burning in the lines is a nice touch. The wood is beautiful. I’ve never worked with Black Locust. How is it to work with?

When the wood is green it turns well. Any other tool will refuse to cut it because the wood is so tough and rubbery. In about a month the wood will be the consistency of concrete. If the wood is no longer green carving knives will not dig into it easily and this stuff will dull all of your tools. Once it has cured fully it is about as dense as hickory and much more rot resistant. Trying to split a log is an absolute nightmare because even after the log is split in half a matrix of finger thick fibers have to be cut out with an axe to actually get both halves to pop apart.

The oddest thing about this wood though is it smells like steak sauce when it is cut
