This is one of those projects that I imagined first, then went out in the shop and made. Originally it was supposed to be a long divided tube, but it didn’t have much of a tone until I cut the slot down the length of it. Then I had to add the end caps to bring out the sound.
It’s made completely from wood I had in the shop. The block is 1/2 inch thick drawer wood with a divider of two glued-together 3/4 inch pieces. The handle is a dowel that I got from some piece of furniture. The beater is a 3/8 inch dowel rod glued into a piece of larger dowel (maybe 1 inch. dia.) I sanded the end of it to look somewhat like a drum stick as decoration. It’s finished with polyurethane.
As usual my wife will be taking this to school to add to her collection of rhythm instruments.
