My cousin asked for an engagement ring box, so I whipped this one out of scraps of Walnut, Redheart and Pine. The concept (see SketchUp pic) ended up being more simplistic that the end product, I couldn’t help myself. I was going to just do Redheart for the splines, but I thought it needed a little pop. Pine was the only good contrast I had around. It ain’t exotic, but I think it works. I also didn’t intend for that tiny lip on the top, just a result of setting the router table ogee bit a little too high. A serendipitous accident.

I definitely need to do some research into the ring-holder-thingy if I’m ever going to do this again. I shaved down a block of foam to fit the box, carved a channel in the middle and wrapped it with silk(ish) ribbon. There was super glue involved which didn’t react to well with the foam, but I got it all to work in the end.

I didn’t have a tiny hinge around so I decided to go with the … I’m not sure what the proper term is. Rabbet and tenon? No, that can’t be right. Anyhow, this was accomplished with chisels. I learning my way around chisels and enjoying it so far.

Finished off with a few coats of BLO. Very proud of my first ring box.

Thank you. This project also has the distinction of being the first original design that I have built.

Looks great! And the tiny lip on the top is great added detail. (Don’t tell anyone it was a mistake, it looks good)
