These two boxes were made with free walnut and spalted hickory from a tree we cut down on our place. Because it was so heavy, the hickory log laid on the ground a couple of years. I finally got a neighbor to load it on a trailer and I had it flat sawn into 10 boards, each about 24×48 inches. By resawing a lot of the 5/4 boards, I’ve been able to make dozens of boxes. I’ve used them as lid panels and have also made boxes totally with the hickory.
You never know what a log contains until you open it. Find yourself a local sawyer and you can scavenge a lot of windfall and standing dead timber.
Excuse the photo quality. They were taken with my iPhone.
