Each year the men of the Naenae MENZ Shed make toys for the Salvation Army. These, amongst others, are given to needy kids at a big Christmas lunch run by the local Salvation Army. Many of the men who made the toys are Grandfathers. We like the idea of older guys helping the very young.

Quite a lot of other production is undertaken for other local charities. For example toys for pre-schools, rat and possum traps for an environmental protection group, a lectern for Grey Power, repairs for old ladies and fire wood for people needing heating. We even make Weta Motels. This is a uniquely NZ term for homes for a very large native spider we have.

Most of the toys are made out of re-cycled pallets that we get from local businesses. They benefit from having the pallets removed for free, we get the wood and the kids get the toys. A nice cycle of events. Some of the toys are pre-owned ones that have been repaired and repainted.

Congratulations. You guys sure made a fine group of toys. They will sure make a lot of kids happy this Christmas and they don’t need batteries or thumb action to work them!!

Need to put a silver fern on them for NZ ID….....................Jim

Thank you all for the comments. They were presented to the Salvation Army this evening along with probably double as much again made by the Members of the Guild of Woodworkers Wellington. We also make wig stands for cancer patients.

What a wonderful thing to do! I bet the wood workers have as much fun getting together as the kids do playing with the toys! I know I would.
