This Coffee table was the first piece of furniture that I designed. The table and legs are made from one, 9’ piece of “Kentucky Coffee Tree”
I figured if your gonna make a coffee table why not make it out of coffee wood. Working with this wood was not a problem except for the weight, it’s very dense and heavy! One problem I did have was the knot in the center of the table, it was rotten and would flake when you touched it. I finally decide to to incorporate it into the design and knocked it out with a chisel and put a window over it flush with the table.
The finish is Danish Oil (Medium Walnut) which i really like and is very easy to apply.

I really like it!
One thing intrigues me though: second picture, on the left, the board that goes across, is it like a hidden butterfly to pull the boards together or sort of a inset apron?
Very nice live edge and a great show of ingenuity in the way you worked around the knot. That’s thinking out of the box for you guys.
Now we want more of your projects, Kevin.

great design! I’m curious about the second image as well….. secret stash spot? The coffee wood is beautiful. I’ve never heard of such a species though. After googling it, it appears it’s pretty hard to come buy at lumber dealers. did you harvest it yourself? Again, great table!
