Our daughter and son-in-law live about 3.5 hours away from us, so last Saturday we met her about half-way and picked up our granddaughter to spend this week with us. Gracie had told us beforehand that she was going to be ‘helping Bampy in his shop to build something” while she was here. (When she was learning to talk, we tried to get her to say “Grampy” but she kept saying “BAMPY” and it stuck)

Gracie is 7 (going on ” I-know-all-there-is-to-know-about-that.” ) and Sunday afternoon after church we headed out to my shop to see what we could build. She seriously expected me to say “Yes” to her idea of a 3-story playhouse with a deck on top and real windows and doors! Once she realized there was no way we were going into the construction business, we decided on a birdhouse for Mommy.

I pre-cut all the pieces (even though she was MORE than willing to try her hand at my radial arm saw) and I let her help with things that were more easily controlled. The pics show the story …

She helped do the sanding (I held the sander with her only to help her guide it around the pieces of wood.) It was turned OFF for the photos.

When it was time to glue and nail, she helped me spread the glue and then I held the nailer while SHE pulled the trigger. (I actually unplugged the air-line for these next 2 pics. )

TA DAAAA! Here it is. Your basic birdhouse built with Bampy’s wood and a whole lot of love!

We went to my paint cabinet and decided on pink. I didn’t get a pic of it, but she put on one of my old shirts so her clothes wouldn’t get paint on them. She painted the entire thing, BY HERSELF, and afterwards she decided it needed something “extra. So she drew a heart on a piece of paper and we cut it out, then used it as a template to spray paint on the roof.
. She decided to give it to her parents when they got here yesterday. There was NO WAY she was going to be patient enough to wait till Christmas. Here it is .. The finished project and a very proud Gracie!

It’s one of the greatest projects you could make. You’re a lucky Bampy.

Now that is some of the very best time you can have with the Grandkids.
Now when do you start on the 3-story playhouse with a deck on top and real windows and doors! You know she can talk you into it if she tries.

Have your say...
