A custom entertainment center to fill an empty alcove.

Challenges?

Matching the existing cabinetry and trim (stain and sheen).
First time I’ve used Alder.
Size (over 9’ tall and 24” deep).
2nd time installing pocket doors.

I found Alder to be a pleasure to work with. It cuts and sands easy, looks great, but is a bit too soft for me. It also blotches uncontrollably (even when sanded to 220); but that is part of the look.

3 coats of water based lacquer (Thumbs up to the Target Coatings products).

Cabinet is actually two pieces, a 30” base and then 80” top. After installing and leveling the base, the top slid right in.

Fun Factor? High, I got to assemble and try out a couple new toys (planer, dust collector). I regret not purchasing a dust collector many years ago.
