With some spare Cherry laying around and an idea from the internet, here is a weekend project completed.

The idea was to not have another plain shelf with hooks to hang my keys on. With the 4 rare earth magnets that I embedded into the wood, you can see it gives a sense of mystery to the project to how they are staying put. Each magnet can hold up to 15lbs of Wt. Since I actually don’t have that many keys, I’ve been hanging my pocket knife as well.

Cunning idea – but did you really need SEVEN screws to fix the unit to the wall ? ( joke! )

just out of curiosity, did you test to see if those magnets still worked when you cover them with a 1/8” veneer?

It would be really cool if the magnets were not visible to add to the “mystery”.

Don —Those aren’t screw holes. My original intent was to have a key whole cut out in the back to hang the shelf via some screws. But, after misjudging the amount of meat my router bit would take out, it bit through before I could stop it. I didn’t want to start over so I just kept making the same “mistake” and made a design out of it.

Matt—No, I didn’t think to do that, but thanks for the idea. I plan on making a couple more of these for Christmas so maybe I’ll give that a shot!
