Well this is another Christmas present completed. This is for my dear old mum who is in her 90’s she made hints that she would like a bird nest box so I made one along with a bird feeder.
Made from panels from a bi-fold door that someone messed up when fitting, the panels were in good clean order and already at the correct thickness for my needs so saved a little time on the prep work. The doors were brand new and had not even been varnished/painted this was another bonus no cleaning up required.
OK I can hear you all say that I am a cheap skate but knowing my mum she would rather I recycled than keep buying new.

I did go out and buy a can of cuprinol in seagrass.

To add to the box I added a line carved bird

Good to see you looking after your mum Derek and using recycled timbers…top marks…
I hope the birds enjoy them as much as your mum will….

Sweet bird house! I like the line carving, too. Nothing wrong with reclaiming wood, either. I’ve managed to gain many board feet of black walnut and white and red oak that way, among other woods. Do you find that the hinges pretty much exceed the cost of the rest of the materials? One thing I’ve done is to use dowels that allow the roof to slide up for seasonal cleaning…though the birds actually seem to be able to take care of that themselves, I’ve observed.

”OK I can hear you all say that I am a cheap skate but knowing my mum she would rather I recycled than keep buying new.”

That reminds me of when our girls were little. My wife seemed to think that when buying gifts at Christmas, for ever dollar we spent for the older child we needed to spend the same amount on the younger one. I used to argue that a 1 year old doesn’t have a CLUE of “value”, so if a $2 rattle satisfied her, but it took a $10 doll to satisfy the 5 year old then they were both happy.

One year I suggested we dig to the bottom of the 5 year olds toy box and give toys that she hadn’t seen in a year to the one year old…. Oh My GAWD! What hell broke loose!

Recycled or new, whatever pleases them the most is the best value to me.
