My first veneer attempt.

Christmas Approaching, Sister wanted an iPod. So I got her one… out of wood. She was ecstatic for a split second. Then gave her the real iPod. She showed her friends, and they kept pressing buttons asking, “Have you charged it yet?”

I only had a few days before Christmas before I thought of this idea, so had little time to make it. Even took the vacuum bag to work.

Have any of you made a gag gift wooden or not?

Select Pine back

Burned in writting (Hobby burner, ouch, need a real burner… Probably buy one from Lee Valley)

I did that sort of with a student’s cell phone one day. When phones get taken away in class I have them drop them in a 5×8 manilla envelope. I then write their name on them. I either decide to give them back at the end of class or send it to the office. It all depends on my mood and the student’s attitude.

This particular student was the typical class clown. I basically cut a block of oak the same size, it worked out to be about the same weight, lightly soften the edges of the block with sandpaper, then put it in a separate envelope.

At the end of the hour, I gave him the gag envelope back, after going through a debate about whether or not I should give it back or give it to the office. His buddy was talking with him as he walked out, so the “phone” stayed in the envelope until he opened it about 100 yards down the hallway.

That was the talk for the next class.

Have your say...
