Super Simple Secret Side Table …I think I just made a tongue twister there ;)
I made these for awhile as I was exploring security based locking systems within furniture.
In this case it is an end table that looks basic enough with a minimal design of vertical wood strips on the sides. Those wood strips hide the details of the hidden drawer quite nicely. The wooden strips are attached to the drawer face, and when closed blends in flawlessly to the other sides. Easy enough drawer assembly as this design has the drawer bottom nailed on from the bottom, no dadoes required.
I wasn’t much for experience on the lathe back then so I repurposed pine ballusters for the legs.
To unlock all you have to do is reach under with one finger and lift the small lever upward and pull on the drawer. I suppose one glance under the table and a person would soon figure it all out, but I think there is a lot to be said for a design that looks otherwise plain and unsuspecting as a first defense.
I painted it a rustic white to help it blend in with the rest of the customers decor, otherwise just about any finish would look pretty good I reckon’.
It’s the Mystery By Design that keeps me making this stuff, its an obsession I think.
