The bookcases look great. I’m about to embark on a bookcase project. I’d love to know what type of wood you used for your project and the thickness of the shelves.

Best Regards,
Mike

Mike, everything is made from 1×10 common pine, stained golden oak and finished in 3 coats of polyurethane (except the back, which is 1/4” unfinished luan). These two are 28.75 inches wide each. The shelves are cut to 28”, with 3/8” blind dadoes into the uprights.

A friend of mine builds bookcases at 36” wide from hardwoods and still gets shelf sag when they’re loaded down. At 30” or less, I don’t have the problem with pine holding 10” hardcovers. At 28” I can load then up with full size textbooks and not have the problem (well, not much).

Have your say...
