I bought the awl on czech edge and made the handle with cocobolo with a shellac finish. The brass knob on the top was originally suppose to spin separately but I screwed up the mount for the bearing so I scrapped that idea and just epoxied it.

Nice. Too bad about the bearing, but I’m sure it’ll work great.

Be careful though, birdcage awls can bite (see the heading “Sigh” in my version of a birdcage awl: http://lumberjocks.com/projects/96682)
